Faith and politics: How they mix varies among believers

Mike Wilder wrote this article in our local paper this morning. It is an interesting read regarding the diversity of views among voting church members.

As I read the article, I was reminded of J. Gresham Machen’s famous comments that orthodoxy and liberalism are not two variants of Christianity, but two different religions. (See his book “Christianity and Liberalism”).

I agree with Wilder’s conclusion that faith can be a powerful motivator in how one chooses to vote. I believe emphatically though, that the object of one’s faith is the most important determining factor in that decision.

As Machen observed, someone whose faith is in the God who reveals Himself in the Bible, will follow the “orthodox religion” and one whose faith is in man and man’s ideas about “his” god, will follow the “liberalism religion.”

Therein is where we will find where the vote falls as well.
