My observations at the Annual March for Life

March For LifeThe following is a news blurb from FRC regarding the Annual March for Life in Washington DC this past Monday. Ironically, I was in town on business and happened to wander with my dad between the Capitol Building and the Supreme Court Building where the masses were still assimilated late in the evening.

One observation that we noticed about the crowds were the differences in ages between those who were pro-life (older in general) and those who were pro-abortion (younger in general). However, there were literally thousands of young people from all over the country, who were present with their youth groups. This was encouraging as it gives credence to the argument that the country may be swinging to a more pro-life majority.

Another observation that we noticed, was how the media primarily ignored the thousands of people there to protest abortion, and focused intently on the eight (yes I said 8) people who were there to support abortion.

My conclusion was that the country is moving to a more pro-life direction, including our younger people, but the media for some reason is resisting letting that little “secret” out.

In Washington, Life Marches OnThe cold and dreary weather in Washington is a fitting backdrop for the 34th Annual March for Life, an event that has even greater significance this year under the new liberal majority in Congress and a growing list of staunchly pro-abortion presidential hopefuls. Today, as we joined tens of thousands of families who flooded the nation’s capital to protest the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade, we reaffirmed with each step that every person, no matter how small or old, is endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights, the first of which is the right to life, regardless of what the Court may say. Since 1973, America has suffered under the legacy of justices who hijacked our Constitution and invented a woman’s so-called right to choose. Now, 45 million casualties later, we face assaults on the sanctity of human life from every front–in clinics, laboratories, classrooms, and the courts. While the war against the unborn sometimes seems insurmountable, today is another reminder that Americans have not forgotten the ugly legacy of Roe. Across the country, the pro-life movement is gaining ground. Five states have introduced bills to join my home state of Louisiana in banning abortion when Roe is overturned. Others are working to pass legislation that would require doctors to tell pregnant women seeking abortions that their unborn child will feel pain. Elsewhere, states are seeking: tighter regulations on abortion clinics, laws enforcing parental consent before a minor seeks an abortion, increased funds for abstinence-only education, and human cloning bans. Here at FRC, we continue to be on the cutting-edge of the life issue as we hosted a Blogs for Life conference today that was packed with attendees who will help us frame the online debate for life.

  1. The problem – Psalm 11:3

    If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?

    The solution – Isaiah 58:12

    And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
    you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
    you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in.

    A Tale of Two Marches

    What a difference an ideology makes. Last Monday, 200,000 pro-lifers descended on the nation’s capital to peacefully protest 34 years of abortion-on-demand. Despite record crowds and a line-up of speakers that included President Bush by phone, the March for Life earned little more than a footnote in the nation’s news. Days later, radical anti-war protestors staged a march in Washington that mustered only 10,000, and the event made the front page of nearly every newspaper in America. Yet for all the media the small demonstration received, few news outlets reported the true headline of the day. According to reports, hundreds of demonstrators were allowed to take the steps of the U.S. Capitol during the march and desecrate the property with “anarchist symbols.” When police formed a security line to stop them, U.S. Capitol Police Chief Phillip Morse ordered his men to fall back and allow the protestors to “exercise their First Amendment rights” by spray-painting the Capitol grounds with graffiti. One source at the scene said that Morse issued an order that no one was to be arrested for desecrating America’s and arguably the world’s greatest symbol of democracy. In an e-mail on his actions, Morse writes, “The graffiti was easily removed by the [Architect of the Capitol] staff… It is [our] duty and responsibility to protect the Capitol complex, while allowing the public to exercise their [freedom of speech].” Imagine the response had Christians “trespassed” onto this public property and prayed for our leaders! I dare say the outcome would have been quite different. Unlike last Monday’s peaceful pro-life protest, this mob of liberals was given access and leniency to commit criminal acts on government property. This special treatment is unacceptable. The Capitol Chief of Police reports directly to the Speaker of the House, a title which now belongs to one of the demonstrators’ most outspoken allies, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Surely, the tens of millions of dollars the American people have invested in the security of their Capitol means there is videotape that will assist in the identification and arrest of the perpetrators. Speaker Pelosi should direct that investigation and prosecution go forward.
